The Best Materials for Outdoor 3D Prints in Florida's Heat and Humidity

Florida is a beautiful state — but its combination of intense heat, UV radiation, and high humidity is brutal on 3D printed parts. If you've ever left a PLA print in your car on a summer day in Jacksonville, you already know what happens. In this guide, we break down the best materials for outdoor use in Florida's climate.

Why Standard PLA Fails Outdoors in Florida

PLA has a glass transition temperature of around 60°C (140°F), which means it can begin to warp or soften inside a hot car, in direct sunlight, or in any outdoor Florida environment during summer. For anything going outside, you'll want to consider alternatives.

PETG: The Best All-Round Outdoor Material

PETG is our top recommendation for most outdoor applications in Florida. It has higher heat resistance than PLA, excellent moisture resistance, good UV stability, and is impact resistant. PETG is ideal for outdoor enclosures, mounting brackets, garden tools, and functional parts exposed to the elements.

ASA: The Best for Direct Sun Exposure

ASA is specifically engineered for outdoor use. It offers superior UV resistance compared to ABS, handles high temperatures well, and resists fading, yellowing, and cracking from prolonged sun exposure. If your part will live permanently outdoors — on a boat, in a garden, on a roof — ASA is the material of choice.

Nylon: For High-Stress Outdoor Parts

Nylon is exceptionally tough with good heat resistance, making it ideal for mechanical outdoor parts like hinges, brackets, and gears. The downside is that nylon absorbs moisture from the air — unavoidable in Florida — which can affect dimensional accuracy over time.

Quick Reference: Florida Outdoor Materials

  • PETG — Best all-round choice for heat and moisture resistance

  • ASA — Best for UV and direct sun exposure

  • Nylon — Best for high-stress mechanical outdoor parts

  • ABS — Decent outdoor performance but prone to UV degradation over time

  • PLA — Avoid for outdoor use in Florida's heat
