How to Prepare Your STL File for 3D Printing (Beginner's Guide)

So you've designed your first 3D model — congratulations! But before it can become a real physical object, your file needs to be properly prepared. At 3D Print Lab Florida, we receive files every day in all conditions, and we've put together this guide to help you get the best possible print the first time.

Step 1: Export as STL or OBJ

Most 3D modeling software — including Fusion 360, Blender, TinkerCAD, and SolidWorks — lets you export directly to STL format. STL is the most universally accepted format for 3D printing. OBJ is also widely supported and is preferred when your model includes color or texture information.

Step 2: Check for Errors With a Slicer

Before sending your file, open it in a slicer like Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Bambu Studio. These free tools will flag common issues like non-manifold geometry, inverted normals, and holes in your mesh. Fixing these before submission saves time and ensures a cleaner print.

Step 3: Check Wall Thickness

For FDM printing, walls thinner than 1.2mm may not print reliably. For resin printing, walls can be thinner — but fragile parts under 0.5mm are prone to breaking. If you're designing something structural, aim for at least 2mm wall thickness for best results.

Step 4: Orient Your Model Correctly

Orientation affects both print quality and strength. Overhangs greater than 45 degrees typically need support material. Flat surfaces should face down on the build plate. If you're unsure about orientation, our team at 3D Print Lab Florida will optimize it for you before printing.

Step 5: Choose the Right Material

PLA is great for general-purpose prints. PETG offers more flexibility and moisture resistance — ideal for functional parts. ABS is tougher but requires a heated enclosure. TPU is flexible and rubber-like, perfect for phone cases, gaskets, and grips. Not sure which material suits your project? Just tell us what the part needs to do and we'll recommend the best option.

Ready to Print? We'll Handle the Rest.

Once your file is ready, simply submit it via our quote request form and our team in Jacksonville, Florida will review it and send you a detailed quote within 1 business day. We handle everything from small one-off prints to large production runs — all with fast turnaround and guaranteed quality.
